Boarding

Ask any of Durham School’s boarders and they will tell you that boarding in the 21st century is fun! The School’s House system and superb facilities are such that pupils soon come to regard their House as their second home run by friendly, experienced and caring staff dedicated to ensuring that all the pupils in their care are happy and well looked after.

The School’s evening and weekend programme are packed with fun and exciting excursions, activities, sports and social time as well as allocated time for ‘prep’ or homework which is, of course, an important part of the programme. Durham City and all its shops and amenities are only a five minutes’ walk away from the boarding houses.

Boarders at Durham School fall into three categories: full boarders, weekly boarders, and occasional boarders. Boarders are accommodated in our four homely boarding Houses – the boys in Poole House, School House, and the girls in Pimlico House. All boarding houses also have a number of day pupils.

Full Boarders
Most full boarders stay at the school seven nights per week, although they can go home at weekends if they wish and it is practicable to do so. In addition, boarders from further afield are allowed to visit their friends who live locally and to stay with them; this is an experience that is greatly valued by the School’s international boarders who can stay with both family friends who live locally, and, of course, the friends they have made whilst in the School.

Weekly Boarding
Weekly boarding is proving more and more popular with boys and girls who live within a 50-mile radius of the School. These pupils regard weekly boarding as the best of both worlds since they can enjoy all the advantages of boarding through the week and still touch base with home and family every weekend.

Occasional Boarding
If the need arises, it is sometimes possible for girls and boys to board for short periods.
